Below, you'll find an overview detailing the research and process behind a project I undertook during my studies in media design.
For this project, I focused on analyzing and redesigning a popular running app called "Runtastic." Runtastic helps runners track their heartbeat, running duration, and other relevant metrics. My research encompassed both UX and UI aspects, involving an in-depth examination of the app itself and its users. Building upon this research, I developed my own app named "Jogalicious."

A. Research Phase:
Initially, I conducted extensive research on the app itself, focusing on its visual appearance, page functionality, and user interaction. Throughout this process, several issues became apparent. The primary concern centered around the homepage, which posed significant usability challenges for users. Specifically, the main function of the homepage was difficult to locate and operate. Additionally, the lack of clear data hierarchy resulted in a cluttered interface with unnecessary information and options, further complicating user interaction.
The next phase of my research involved gaining insights into the app's users. I conducted this research by analyzing reviews and comments on Google Play from individuals who have used the app. This approach provided valuable information regarding the demographics of jogging app users, including their age, location, motivations for running, frustrations with existing apps, and aspects they appreciate. Utilizing this data, I developed three distinct user personas to serve as the foundation for my design approach.
B. Identifying Solutions:
After developing user personas and conducting thorough research on the app and its users, I proceeded to formulate 'How Might We' questions. These questions serve as essential prompts to thoroughly understand the underlying issues before delving into potential solutions.
Here are some examples of the questions I posed:
"How might we design a Stop running button that is easy to use after a strenuous cardio session, without the risk of accidental activation?" (In the original Runtastic app, this was addressed with two separate buttons requiring double tapping, which I found to be inefficient.)
"How might we effectively communicate the value of the premium option to users without overwhelming their visual experience?"
"How might we enhance the personalization of user profiles?"
C. Business Strategy:
It's a well-established fact that apps require profitability to sustain operations. While our primary focus is User Experience, it's crucial to recognize that our ultimate allegiance lies with the company's success. Finding a balance between user satisfaction and profitability is key.
The original 'Runtastic' app operates on a 'Freemium plan,' offering basic features for free while reserving additional functionalities, such as music and advanced statistics, for premium subscribers. While this model represents a compromise between user needs and company objectives, its implementation within the app often leads to a cluttered interface, potentially alienating users with aggressive premium plan promotions.
Drawing from our research insights into user behavior and the understanding that people are more inclined to pay for socially interactive experiences, I proposed integrating a gamification component into the app. This feature allows users to engage in friendly competition with others worldwide, send encouraging messages, and track each other's running achievements. By introducing this social element, I aimed to incentivize users to opt for premium features, transforming solitary running into a more interactive and engaging experience.

D. Wireframing:
At this phase, I translated the conclusions drawn from the 'How Might We' questions into a wireframe skeleton outlining the desired design direction.

E. UI Design:
This phase was particularly enjoyable for me. Here, I brought together all the solutions derived from my research to craft an app that is visually captivating and engaging for users.
Updated from late 2023: Occasionally, I revisit projects that I've previously worked on and redesign them. I find that my UI skills have improved since then, and I believe that the new designs for Jogalicious better represent my current capabilities.
